Folly Of ‘Comparison Mentality’

Text: Luke 18:9-14, 2 Corinthians 10:12-16

Memory Verse: “For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise”
(2 Corinthians 10:12).

This parable of Jesus contrasts the prayer of a Pharisee and tax collector in the temple. The Pharisee was boasting and despising the tax collector, while the tax collector humbly prayed and sought for God’s mercy. Consequently, the tax collector went home justified by God, while the Pharisee was rejected. Many Christians are complicit in this folly of comparison, thus resulting in selfcommendation. Paul said “..they measuring themselves by themselves, and
comparing themselves among themselves are not wise” (2 Corinthians 10:12). We justify ourselves for being wiser, holier, more gifted, more blessed, more prayerful, or even more anointed than fellow Christians. Rather than focusing
with a contrite heart on God’s visitation, the Pharisee was preoccupied with self-praise and dwelt largely on his self-righteousness.

2 Corinthians 13:5 admonishes us to constantly examine ourselves. This requires an introspective assessment and appraisal of your spiritual status, as well as guards your heart against pride and haughtiness, because ‘God resists
the proud and gives grace to the humble’ (James 4:6). The Pharisee, while displaying a distorted appraisal of himself, was equally despising his fellow worshipper condescendingly. He failed to realise that God does not look at the
outward appearance as man does.

Finally, comparing may also mislead you. You should cease from venerating men and instead ‘look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.’ In doing so, He perfects other areas of our imperfections and limitations (Hebrews 12:2).

Prayer Points:
1. Lord, help me to always review my heart, that I might not sin against You.
2. Lord, let not my heart be lifted up in pride and haughtiness.
