Numbers 32:1-5; Joshua 22:1-5
Memory Verse:
“And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brethren, as He promised them; now therefore, return and go to your tents and to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of Jordan” (Joshua 22:4).
When the Israelites got to the land on the east side of Jordan, the WReubenites, the Gadites and half the tribe of Manasseh asked Moses to allocate that portion of land to them. Their main reason
was that the land was suitable for livestock and they had a lot of livestock! However, Moses felt that their demand was outrageous – allowing them to settle there at that time would be a discouragement to the other tribes who still had to cross over to the other side of Jordan.
The men wanted to secure and fortify that region for their families, but assured Moses that they would arm themselves and go with their brethren to fight in order to conquer the remaining lands on the other side of Jordan. Moses granted their request and assured them that, as long as they kept their promise, the land shall be their possession (Numbers 32:20-22).
Eventually, it was Joshua who fulfilled the promise made by Moses to these two and a half tribes. After the rest of the tribes had taken possession of their allotments on the other side of Jordan, he asked them to return to their tents and the land of their possessions (Joshua 22:3-4).
