Text: 1 Samuel 26:1-8

Memory Verse: “So David and Abishai came to the people by night; and there Saul lay sleeping within the camp, with his spear stuck in the ground by his head. And Abner and the people lay all around him” (1 Samuel 26:7).

There are different types of helpers like timely helpers, compelled helpers, daily helpers, tireless helpers etc. There are also sleeping helpers, like the men who were supposed to be guarding over King Saul, as seen in today’s passage. It has been said that “you cannot arrive early at your destiny when your helper arrives late. So also is your destiny at peril when your helpers are asleep.”

Saul and his men, while pursuing after innocent David, found themselves in the Wilderness of Ziph. “Then Saul arose and went down to the Wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in
the Wilderness of Ziph. And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, opposite Jeshimon, by the road. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw thatSaul came after him into the wilderness” (1 Samuel 26: 2-3). Imagine what would have happened to King Saul that night, if not for the fear of God in the heart of David. Abner the commander of King Saul’s army and others were fast asleep together with the king when David and his men came to them. These were sleeping helpers, just like the disciples, who Jesus took along with Him to the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46). May you not be surrounded with sleeping helpers, but by correct helpers, like Aaron and Hur who held up the hands of Moses while Joshua was on the battlefront (Exodus 17:10-13).

Prayer Points:
1. Father, deliver me from sleeping helpers around me.
2. Father, please surround me with correct and tireless helpers from today.
