Psalm 23: 1-6
Memory Verse:
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6).
This is a very popular Psalm that we all love to recite. In it, we see the TPsalmist declaring the LORD as his shepherd who makes him lie down in green pastures and beside the still waters, making him to lack nothing. It is also a common practice with the Psalmist not to use words like
“maybe,” or “perhaps,” or “possibly,” or “hopefully.” No, he says, “Surely,” as he concludes this passage with this term of certainty. “Surely” means absolutely; without a doubt! There are many things in life you cannot be sure of. You go for a physical checkup and discover you have malignant growth. You work in the same company for years believing your job is secure, but they downsize and all youare left with is a pink slip. You pray for your children, live an exemplary life before them, and teach them what is right, then you find yourself down at the police station trying to get them out of lockup because they were arrested for drunk driving or doing drugs. As children of God, there are two things you can be sure of, however; the “goodness and mercy” of God. Jesus said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). His goodness guarantees that every need you have can be met, and His mercy guarantees that every sin you commit can be forgiven;
What a privilege! Your concept of God is important as it will determine your confidence in Him.
Like David, never doubt God’s goodness and mercy toward you.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, thank You for Your goodness and mercy made available to me.
2. Just as sheepdogs drive strays back into the fold, LORD, let Your goodness and mercy drive me back into Your loving arms every time I stray.
