Text: Matthew 20:20-23
Memory Verse: “And He said to her, ‘What do you wish?’ She said to Him, ‘Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom’” (Matthew 20:21).
Mothers are very important in homes, and their role in families cannot be underestimated. You can see a mother’s love exemplified in the lives of Hagar and Ishmael as she tried to save her son’s life and not watch him die (Genesis 21:15 & 16). Hannah sought for Samuel for many years, but when she eventually got him, she wisely gave him to the Lord (1 Samuel 1,11,27 & 28). Mrs Zebedee was no different. In her request to the Lord, she showed that:
1. She wanted her sons to be part of Christ’s kingdom. Notwithstanding the family financial success, she wanted their spiritual success. You must set the right priorities for your children to be involved in kingdom activities (Matthew 6:33).
2. She wanted them to serve in Christ’s kingdom rather than being onlookers, so she requested roles for them on His right and left hands. Serving the Lord begins at home; be ready to teach the children by example. When they see how much you are committed to God’s service, they will not depart from it. Lois and Eunice apparently did a good job of raising Timothy. Emulate them.
3. She did not want them just to be a part of the kingdom, but wanted them to be powerfully used and fulfil their greatest potential there.
Hannah gave Samuel to God. Have you given your children to the Lord? Regardless of what you see today and how old they are, keep teaching and praying for them.
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, please bless my mother for her role in my life.
2. Lord, make me a mother after Your heart.
