Text: Ephesians 6:1-3
Memory Verse: “Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honour Me I will honour, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed”(1 Samuel 2:30&31).
Honour connotes proper recognition accorded a person, deity or an event. It is a powerful tool and currency that occasions favour to be released to the giver. You can express honour with your respectful behaviour, cheerful giving, thoughtful and polite words etc. According to the scriptures, when honour is properly done, it provides these
derivable benefits:
1. Favour: The story of Rebekah and Abraham’s servant exemplifies this. Rebekah responded to the servant’s request with honour and grace and she was bountifully rewarded with favour to become the wife of Isaac. Without expecting any reward, she went ahead to grant the servant’s request to provide water to him and his cattle.
2. Forgiveness: Ahab was one of the wicked and notorious kings in the Bible, yet when God sent a warning to him via the prophet Elijah, he moved with reverent fear to wear sack clothes and humble himself. This behaviour attracted God’s attention and mercy. God moved the occurrence of the prophesied evil from his days to that of his children.
3. Fortified Life: The only commandment with a promise is ‘Honour your father and Mother.’ The promise is a guarantee of long life. Honour can fortify and prolong the life of the giver. Honour is a virtue, weapon and currency of life. As scripture admonishes, Let us honour God and all men. In addition, let us give due honour to our parents,
biological and spiritual, so that our days may be long in the land of the living.
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, give me grace to humble myself to honour every man.
2. Lord, grant me grace to give due honour to my biological and spiritual parents.
