Text:
Exodus 15:1-8
Memory Verse:
“I will sing to the LORD, For He has triumphed gloriously.
The horse and its rider, He has thrown into the sea” (Exodus 15:1).
A song is a short piece of music, usually written out in words. Songs evoke emotions, memories and even affect the will of men – people oftentimes act on the songs they hear. People may begin to dance, especially if the music touches the strings of their heart. The Psalms are, generally, referred to as the Songbook of the Bible because many of them were written to be sung.
Today’s song of Moses, celebrates the victory experienced by the Israelites at the Red Sea. Moses declared that God is a Man of War – the right hand of the Lord had dashed the enemy in pieces, God guided His people to His chosen place. Imagine the sight! The people had fearfully walked through the Red Sea with the waters standing upright as pillars on their right and left, only to look
back the following morning and see the corpses of the terrible army that had been pursuing them floating on water!
In another song in Deuteronomy 32:1-43, Moses encourages the reader to ascribe greatness to our God, the Rock, whose work is perfect and whose ways are just. In 2 Samuel 2: 1-16, Hannah declares that there is none holy like the Lord, neither is there any Rock like Him. The Lord is the God of knowledge, He girds the weak who stumbles with strength, He makes the barren woman
to become a mother of children. God can cause us to smile at our enemies because of His salvation. Can you sing songs to celebrate the victories God has wrought in your life?
