Text: James 3:1-10
Memory Verse: “For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body” (James 3:2).
Did I really just say that?” Tim thought as Jane ran out of the room crying. He had told her exactly how he felt, but now wished he had kept his mouth shut. Words are very powerful and must be weighed and chosen thoughtfully.
It is said that “Clothes may disguise a fool, but his words tell exactly who he is.” Your words reveal exactly who you are because they expose your inner thoughts. You must control your thoughts, but even more your words. Out of
the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). The only way to get your thoughts right is to guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23). What are the things you allow into your heart? God’s word and standards or earthly standards?
Have you ever spoken and immediately wished you had not? Obviously, those words had a negative effect. You need to take the words you speak seriously because they have consequences. Let your words be seasoned with salt giving
grace to the hearers (Colossians 4:6). Your thoughts only become known when you say them out, so, watch your words. Man has tamed many things, but is unable to tame the tongue, it takes God’s grace and power. The bridle in a horse’s mouth controls it because it causes pain; the horse is forced to obey the bidding of the one who holds the reins. So, you also must bridle your tongue to avoid the pain it causes.
Prayer Points:
1. Strengthen me as I strive to fill my heart with Your words of wisdom, O Lord.
2. Lord, help me to succeed in bridling my tongue.
