Text: 1 Samuel 16:16-21; James 3:13-16
Memory Verse: “So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armour bearer” (1 Samuel 16:21).
Some relationships, specifically marriages, some say, are made in heaven. This romantic notion tries to explain the dynamics that result in two people meeting, believing that they are made for each other and vowing to love and stand by each other all their lives. In some cases, however, things do not work out, and can go awfully wrong. Why?
When Saul was anointed by Samuel, the spirit of God came on him, enabling him to do things he otherwise could not have done (1 Samuel 10:6,9 & 10). As he deviated from God, he needed help to stir up the presence of God again; David was hired, and Saul loved him. How did King Saul’s love for David at first sight turn into hatred? (1 Samuel 18:2, 5-12). It is because as the Spirit of God left him, envy, insecurity and hatred crept in. It is the Spirit of God in a man that keeps Satan and his cohorts at bay.
Relationships succeed because of continuous effort and commitment but, most importantly, help from God through the Holy Spirit is required. Allowing the Holy Spirit in your life neutralises the human tendencies in you such as getting angry about little and, sometimes, unimportant things. He helps you to navigate life as you forgive others, overlook and overcome their faults and differences (John 14:26). How much of the word of God do you obey? How much room do you give the Holy Spirit in your heart, actions and reactions?
Prayer Points:
1. Holy Spirit, please take Your rightful place in my life.
2. May I receive the Spirit of humility so my relationships can be led by You, O Lord.
