Creating Opportunity To Help

Text: Genesis 18:1-7
Memory Verse: “Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant. ‘They said, “Do as you have said”” (Genesis 18:4&5).

Though many Christians are quick to quote Galatians 6:10, which says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all…”, some use the verse to excuse inaction saying, “I had no opportunity to help anyone.” Similarly, in Luke 10:29, a man, seeking to justify himself, asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbour?” prompting the parable of the Good Samaritan. But true love does not wait for ideal opportunities; it creates them.

Consider Father Abraham, who provides a remarkable example. He was sitting at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. This act of sitting outside symbolised openness and availability. How accessible are you to others? Do people find you approachable? Then he “lifted his eyes and looked”; he was observant. You must learn to be sensitive to your surroundings. Pay attention. Ask questions when something does not seem right. Sometimes, asking is all it takes to open the door to help someone in need.

When Abraham saw the strangers, he ran to meet them and bowed low to the ground, a sign of humility and honour. Many people avoid you, not because you cannot help, but because your attitude is uninviting. Pride, aloofness or indifference can block opportunities to bless others.

Examine your posture, physically and spiritually. Are you positioned to be used by God? The Holy Spirit can help you cultivate humility, attentiveness and compassion. God is counting on you to be His hands and feet in a hurting world.

Prayer Points:
1. Lord, open my eyes to opportunities to give to others.
2. Father, give me a large heart that shares willingly
