Do You Know God Personally?

Text: 2 Chronicles 24:15-22

Memory Verse: “Therefore they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served wooden images and idols; and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of their trespass” (2 Chronicles 24:18).

Jehoiada, the priest, who through God’s help, protected young Joash, and Jhid him from wicked Athaliah’s murderous intentions, had just died. He had nurtured him till age seven; installed him as king; and guided him
through the most critical and significant period of his life and reign. While Jehoida lived, the leaders identified with God, and joyfully brought their contribution into the house of God for its repair (2 Chronicles 24:10-12). Sadly, against the beauty of Jehoiada’s life is the horrifying twist in the life of King Joash and leaders of Israel who, soon after Jehoiada’s demise, turned to idols, conspired against Zachariah for speaking against their backsliding into
idolatry and, at the king’s command, murdered him. How was it that Joash failed to remember the kindness of Jehoiada, and killed his son? What could have been responsible for such soon turning away from the Lord?

Obviously, neither the king nor the leaders were grounded in their knowledge of God. Their seeming commitment to God and His things were only because of Jehoiada’s influence and guidance. This is a dangerous state of affairs, which is also prevalent in the body of Christ today. Many believers do not know God for themselves, even when they are actively serving Him in church. They only operate under the influence of their parents or leaders and, so, lack the depth of understanding that can sustain them on their own once such influence is removed.
Do you know God personally, or are you one of such believers that relies on other people’s belief?

Prayer Points:
1. Lord, help me to know You personally and be deeply grounded in Your word.
2. May I never turn away from knowing, loving and serving You, dear Lord.
