Text: Revelation 2: 4 -7
Memory Verse: “Nevertheless, I have this against you, that you have left your
first love” (Revelation 2:4).
When a man and woman begin a relationship, they often go out of Wtheir way to avoid offending each other, especially in the early stages and into marriage. While some couples manage to keep the fire of love alive, for others, it slowly fades due to various pressures and distractions.
In a similar way, the church in Ephesus started with fervent love for God but was later rebuked for abandoning that “first love” (Revelation 2:4&5). Many believers today mirror this pattern. After an initial period of zeal marked by faithful service, giving, and devotion; the passion cools. Familiarity creeps in. God is no longer honoured as before; worship becomes selective, and obedience, conditional.
This is not new. It is a human tendency seen throughout Scripture, but God’s counsel remains unchanged: remember where you once stood, repent, and return to your first love. Like a married couple that must intentionally rekindle
their bond, so must a believer rekindle his or her walk with God, and strive to maintain a close relationship with Him.
Take time to reflect: how did you love and serve God when you first believed? How does that compare to now? Your level of love is known by both you and God. But there is hope; He is ever willing to help you return (John 6:37). The fire can burn again, and even brighter. If you are willing, He is ready. Revisit your first love to God.
Prayer Points:
1. Forgive me, Lord, for my waning love for You.
2. Holy Spirit, please kindle the fire afresh in me.
