Text: Psalm 27:1-6, 10-14
Memory Verse: “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13).
Everyone needs support in this wild and brutal life. The forces arraigned against humans are formidable. Only the well-insured can navigate the waters successfully. Without help, it is easy to lose heart. Unfortunately, many people turn to drugs, substances, alcohol or other people or deities for help to their detriment. The wise turns to God as Isaac Williams did in his 1838 famous hymn:
1 Be Thou my guardian and my guide, and hear me when I call;
let not my slippery footsteps slide, and hold me lest I fall.
2 The world, the flesh, and Satan dwell around the path I tread;
O save me from the snares of hell, Thou quickener of the dead.
3 And if I tempted am to sin, and outward things are strong,
do Thou, O Lord, keep watch within, and save my soul from wrong.
4 Still let me ever watch and pray, and feel that I am frail;
that if the tempter cross my way, yet he may not prevail.
What or who constitutes your support system in this cruel world? Joseph experienced life’s problems, even from family members (Genesis 37:18-27). In the most difficult situation, God must still be your strength. He is stronger than the strongest and wiser than the wisest. King David acknowledged it in Psalm 8:27 and Job witnessed it firsthand (Job 42:1-6).
Are you weary from fighting life’s battles alone? Turn to God; share your burdens with godly friends and find Christian fellowship.
Prayer Points:
1. Be Thou my guardian and my guide, Lord.
2. Lord, please hear me as often as I call.
