Text: Genesis 39:7-16
Memory Verse: “that she caught him by his garment, saying, ‘Lie with me.’ But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside” (Genesis 39:12).
Can you imagine the inner turmoil Joseph must have felt when Potiphar’s wife persistently tried to seduce him. Day after day, she lured him with tempting words and seductive looks. Yet, Joseph made a firm decision, “he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her” (Genesis 39:10b). He took deliberate steps to avoid being alone with her, understanding that proximity to temptation is dangerous.
Joseph knew that to sleep with another man’s wife would be a great sin, not just against Potiphar, but against God. Despite the repeated advances, he remained steadfast. But then came the day she trapped him. Finding him alone, she grabbed his garment, demanding he give in. Joseph did not argue or try to reason. He simply fled. He left his garment in her hands and ran. It was bold. It was decisive. And it was wise and deliberate.
Joseph’s action speaks volumes. He was saying: “You may have my clothes, but not my soul. You can grab my coat, but not my destiny.” He chose to preserve his integrity, even at the cost of being misunderstood and falsely accused.
Are you facing persistent temptations? Are you trying to resist, but feel cornered? Learn from Joseph. When there is nothing else to do, when the pressure is too much, then let go of the garment. Walk away. Protect your purpose. Your destiny is worth more than temporary pleasure. Flee from sin. Stand firm. God will honour your obedience.
