Text: Titus 2:1-10
Memory Verse: “And not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive” (Titus 2:10, NIV).
Paul the apostle provides Titus with clear instructions on Christian doctrine and conduct, specifically tailored for various groups within the body of Christ. His purpose was to promote sound teaching and godly living among believers, so that their lives would reflect the transforming power of the Gospel.
He instructed that older men should be sober, dignified, temperate, and sound in faith, love, and patience. Older women were to be reverent in behaviour, not slanderers or addicted to much wine, but examples and teachers of what is good. They were to admonish the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, good, and obedient to their husbands so that the Word of God would not be blasphemed (Titus 2:3-5).
Young men were to be sober-minded and in all things show themselves as examples of good works, with integrity in doctrine, reverence, and sound speech that is beyond reproach. Even servants were included; they were to obey their masters, be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not stealing, but showing good faithfulness in all things.
The ultimate goal of these instructions was to make the doctrine of God attractive and credible to those outside the faith. When believers live according to these godly principles, the Gospel is adorned with beauty and becomes appealing, drawing others to Christ. Take a moment today to reflect: “Is my life making the Gospel of Christ and the doctrine of God attractive to others?” Let your conduct preach even louder than your words.
