Text: Joshua 7: 1-4
Memory Verse: “So about three thousand men went up there from the people, but they fled before the men of Ai” (Joshua 7:4).

The story of the Israelites’ defeat before the people of Ai is a vivid reminder of the consequences of disobedience to God’s commands. Achan’s disobedience in taking the accursed thing that God had explicitly forbidden, brought about disaster not just for himself, but for the entire nation (Joshua 7:1). The enemy gained the upper hand, and the normally victorious Israelites found themselves running from their enemies. Thirty-six men were struck down, and the people’s hearts melted with fear, becoming like water.

God’s plan for His people is that they should overcome their enemies, not flee from them. Disobedience, however, creates a spiritual breach that weakens them and gives the enemy access to defeat them. Achan’s hidden sin became excess baggage that weighed the Israelites down, preventing them from experiencing victory. No one can please or serve God effectively while carrying the burden of disobedience.

Your living a victorious Christian life requires total submission and obedience to God. Disobedience brings negative consequences for you and impacts those around you, including their family, community, and church, just like Achan’s
disobedience did to his family and the whole of Israel. Are you tempted to disobey God? Reflect on Achan’s story and how disobedience cost him and his family their lives. Remember that the life you live has a ripple effect on those around you. To live in victory, you must choose obedience at all times. True victory comes through obeying God’s commands, following His will, and walking in righteousness.

Prayer Points:
1. I reject the spirit of disobedience and its excess luggage in my life and family.
2. O Lord, my life will not bring destruction upon my family and the Church.
