Text: Philippians 4:11-13, 1 Timothy 6:6-10
Memory Verse: “Now godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).
Contentment is a state of happiness and satisfaction with one’s life, recognising one’s blessings and accepting what one has, rather than constantly striving for more. It is about finding joy in the present moment, appreciating simple things, and cultivating a grateful heart. Paul, the apostle, demonstrated this.
Unfortunately, in an attempt to search for contentment, some have gone outside God’s principles and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. God lamented that Israel had forsaken Him, the fountain of living water and dug broken cisterns for themselves in an attempt to seek contentment, and it landed them in tragedy (Jeremiah 2:12-17).
We cannot find satisfaction in anyone or anything else but Jesus. Therefore, watch out against these three things that constantly feed discontentment:
1. Greed – When you dwell on what you do not have, you are not enjoying what God has already given you. Be satisfied! Setting goals is good, but stop focusing so hard on the end result and learn to rejoice in the Lord while you are on your way.
2. Fear- It wants you to run from something that is not chasing you. It is the enemy’s way of robbing you of peace and stability, tormenting you with the ‘what ifs’ and keeping you from trusting God. The Psalmist said, ‘In God I trust; I will not be afraid…’ (Psalm 56:4 NIV). Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you do not have. Are you looking for contentment? Try Jesus!
Prayer Points:
1. Help me, Holy Spirit, to always find satisfaction in Christ.
2. Help me, Lord, to guard against greed, fear and seeking satisfaction in
wrong places.
