The concept of the sinful nature is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, addressing the innate inclination towards disobedience and rebellion against God (Genesis 3:23). The Bible offers profound insights into this subject, revealing humanity’s struggle with sin and the need for redemption; hence the reason for us to daily work out our salvation. From the story of Adam and Eve’s fall in the Garden to the struggles of individuals throughout history, a clear picture of Man’s fallen state is manifest. In Romans 7:8, Paul, the Apostle, laments, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.” We can see Paul’s vivid explanation of the internal conflict between the desire to do good and the inability to do it because of man’s helplessness to overcome the sinful nature without divine intervention.
Overcoming a sinful nature is beyond what your physical strength can execute. It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit that you can avoid being subject to the dictates and passions of the flesh. Always ensure you are constantly inclined to God only. Preoccupy your mind with godly thoughts only, and meditate on the word of God. Remember that the grace of God is always enough for you. Your salvation is a gift from God, not something earned through human effort (Ephesians 2:8-9). For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
