Text: James 4:1-6
Memory Verse: “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” (Psalm 66:18).
The hymn writer beautifully captured the essence of our relationship with Jesus when he penned, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!” Yet, many times, we forfeit the peace and relief that come with prayer because we fail to bring our burdens before God. Prayer is an incredible privilege, a direct communication between man and God, with Jesus as our mediator. Unfortunately, many do not realise its immense power and importance.
At some point in life, if it has not happened already, you will find yourself eagerly waiting for God to answer your prayers. It is a blank cheque which God has given you; one that reflects His willingness to intervene in your life. Jesus emphasised the significance of prayer, saying, “My house shall be called a house of prayer” (Matthew 21:13).
There are certain factors, however, that can limit the power of prayer: praying amiss which entails prayers being driven by selfish desires, lack of faith, an unclean heart, hypocrisy; where your actions do not align with your words, and disobedience. Achan exhibited some of these characteristics, causing defeat for the Israelites (Joshua 7).
Do not let sin hinder your prayers. Deal with it before it deals with you and limits the potential of your prayers. Obedience and purity of heart will open the heavens and unleash the full power of your communication with God.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, forgive my ignorance.
2. My Lord and my God, deal with the root of sin in my life today.
