Text: Genesis 17:1- 9
Memory Verse: “No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations” (Genesis 17:5).
People’s names are often changed when their lives begin to take on a deeper meaning and especially when God intends to use them for purposes that transcend generations. A notable example is the woman, her name and identity is transformed when God begins to raise godly families through her.
When God changed Abram’s name to Abraham from “exalted father” to “father of many nations”, He painted a vivid picture of the promised child and the eternal redemption that would come through that seed. Similarly, when Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, He revealed Peter’s spiritual identity and the key role he would play in building the church (John 1:42).
For everyone who comes to Christ, a transformation occurs, you bear the name of Christ. You undergo a change of status and essence. If you were a failure, you become a winner in Christ. If poor, you gain the riches of Christ. You were bound by sin and Christ becomes your righteousness.
2 Corinthians 5:17 a declares, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature.” That new creature, like a newborn baby, must bear a new name. You are called a Christian, follower of Christ, and spiritually, you are made to sit in heavenly
places with Him (Ephesians 2:6). You are promised that you shall receive a new name in heaven, a name reflecting your eternal identity in God. Rejoice today because in Christ, your name, your nature, and your destiny have been
changed forever!
Prayer Points:
1. Father, may the blood of Jesus reverse whatever negative influence my old name has given me.
2. Lord, help me to benefit in the ultimate name change in heaven.
