Are You Competing With Others?

Text:
John 21:17-22

Memory Verse:
“Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, ‘But Lord, what about this man?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me” (John 21:21&22).

Some things seem to come to us naturally because they are talents and abilities with which we have been endowed by God. Romans 12:6-8 explains that each believer has been given a gift different from others. That implies that each person, probably, has an assignment different from the
other and so requires a different gifting. The problem, however, is that we tend to compare ourselves with others, breeding unnecessary jealousy and rivalry. Peter had been earmarked for a
great work of feeding the Lord’s sheep and taking care of the disciples after Jesus left. Frustrated with the happenings after the Lord’s death, he went fishing and others followed. When confronted by Jesus, he appeared more interested in the assignment Jesus had for John than his (John 21:21). Jesus’ response was simple, ‘mind your own business.’
Comparing the performance or talents exhibited by siblings is one thing many parents have done to their hurt. The resulting rivalry has led to problems. Whilst challenging people about the performance of others sometimes helps them to aspire higher in life, when stretched to ridiculous lengths, it creates unhealthy rivalry and jealousy.
Are you competing with others in your family, at work or in church? Are you being driven by an inordinate desire to outdo others or even win the affection of your boss or parents? Leah tried hard to win Jacob’s affection and attention, but ended up creating more problems in her home (Genesis 29&30). God has a special purpose for you. You do not need to compete with others for
recognition.

Prayer Points:
1. Thank You for equipping me for Your service, Lord. I will not be jealous of others.
2. May I recognise the special assignment You have for me, dear Lord.
