Text: Deuteronomy 15:7-11
Memory Verse: “For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore, I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land’” (Deuteronomy 15:11).
Jesus’ words, “You will always have the poor with you” (Matthew 26:11), reminds us that there will always be those in need around us. As believers, Jwe have a responsibility to care for them. But who is the poor and needy? It is anyone who is disadvantaged, unable to provide for himself, or struggling to meet his basic needs at any time.
The challenge, sometimes, is how do we determine what to give and what quantity? The answer lies in the intentional decision to set aside a portion of our earnings – salary, business profits, or commissions – to help those in need. This does not always have to be a large amount or in the form of money. It can come as food, clothes, or other necessities of life. What matters is the heart behind the giving and the willingness to make a difference in someone else’s life, like the Apostles (Acts 20:35).
Dedicating a portion of your income to help others is a powerful example of how this principle can be lived out. The blessings from this act of kindness cannot be quantified because the reward for such generosity often goes beyond material returns. It touches the soul, bringing joy, peace, and a deeper connection with God.
So, think of the poor and needy. When you are generous, you reflect the heart of God, who is ever compassionate and merciful to all. Your small act of kindness might be the lifeline that someone desperately needs to survive.
Prayer Points:
1. Oh Lord God, help me to remember the poor and the needy around me, and give me grace to meet their needs.
2. Lord, help me not to be selfish and think only of myself.
