God Uses Those That Are Available

Text:
2 Kings 2:6-14

Memory Verse:
“Then Elijah said to him, ‘Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan.’ But he said, ‘Asthe Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!’ So the two of them went on” (2 Kings 2:6).

From 2 Kings 2, it appeared that Elijah knew that he was to be taken away by God and, though Elisha and the sons of the prophets also knew, it was only Elisha that followed his master purposefully and tirelessly.
Together they went through Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho and Jordan. Elijah tried to
dissuade him, but he persevered. After they crossed over the Jordan, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! what may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha requested for a double
portion of the spirit that was upon Elijah (2 Kings 2:9). The request would be granted on the condition that he saw Elijah as he was being taken away. Elisha remained focused, his request was granted and he became father to the other sons of the prophets.
There are lessons to learn from Elisha’s encounter:
1. God honours faithfulness, sincerity and purpose-driven desire.
2. We need tenacity of faith to walk with God. Such tenacity brings us to the knowledge and understanding of God.
3. However difficult or long the wait is, God can never fail; therefore, hold on to Him (Habakuk 2:3).
4. Divine promotion is for us, if we do not faint, or join others to do evil.
5. Elisha received a double portion of the spirit that was on Elijah because he walked closely with him. He did not follow him from a distance as the sons of the prophets did. Be available to be used by God.

Prayer Points:
1. Lord, grant me the grace and the strength to follow You steadfastly till the end.
2. Father, let me be available for You at all times.
