Text: Acts 4:24-33
Memory Verse: “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness (Acts 4:31).
There is hardly anything a Christian can do to make a lasting spiritual impact through mere human effort. The work of God cannot be accomplished by talent, intellect, or strength alone. It requires power from on high; divine empowerment through the Holy Spirit. This is why Jesus instructed His disciples to remain in Jerusalem after His resurrection until they received the promised power (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8). Without this divine power, their mission would have been ineffective.
The “power from on high” refers to the anointing or divine ability that comes upon a believer when filled with the Holy Spirit. It is this power that enables effective witnessing, victorious Christian living, and boldness in spiritual battles. It transforms ordinary men into instruments of extraordinary impact.
Though this power is a promise to all believers, it must be actively sought and received. This is what it means to tarry, i.e., to remain in the place of prayer, seeking God’s face earnestly for the outpouring of His Spirit. It is not a passive waiting, but an intentional, prayerful hunger for divine empowerment.
Importantly, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is not a one-time experience. As seen in Acts 4, even after Pentecost, the early believers gathered again and were refilled as they prayed in unity. Continuous infilling is necessary for sustained impact. If we consistently tarry in prayer and remain spiritually thirsty, God will fill us afresh and, through us, He will do mighty works.
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, grant me strength to tarry until I receive the power from on high.
2. Lord, help me to make a great impact on Your work on earth.
