Prayer And Fasting As Warfare

Text: Ephesians 6:10-18
Memory Verse: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Prayer is not a passive exercise, but an active spiritual warfare. Every time we pray, we engage invisible forces, confronting both physical and unseen barriers. Our weapons are not human tools, but powerful spiritual instruments that provoke divine intervention (2 Corinthians 10:4). Through prayer, the kingdom of darkness is pierced and heaven responds. Jesus understood this deeply. After His baptism, He did not rush into public ministry but retreated into prayer. There, in the secret place, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended, and God’s voice affirmed Him. Though few witnessed His prayer, its effects were undeniable. This depth of communion led Him to fast for 40 days, strengthening His spirit for what lay ahead.

Fasting is an important tool for Spirit-filled believers. But before fasting, ask, “Am I filled with the Holy Spirit?” Without Him, you cannot confront the spiritual powers described in Ephesians 6:12. Fasting is more than abstaining
from food; it is turning from comfort to seek God’s face and power. Even if health limits traditional fasting, you can embrace a fasted life; a lifestyle of purpose, discipline, and spiritual sensitivity. Like Daniel, you must learn to say ‘no’ to indulgence and ‘yes’ to God’s will.

Prayer and fasting, when practised with sincerity, can be a powerful form of spiritual defence. Believers are, therefore, encouraged to pray with power and understanding. Embrace discipline. Let each choice push you closer to God’s heart and further into spiritual victory. Through prayer and fasting, revival can be birthed and strongholds torn down.

Prayer Points:
1. O Lord, let the church and our families stand strong in the day of battle.
2. Lord Jesus, uphold the will of God for my life, so that all the strongholds of the devil that have been destroyed remain shattered.
