Setting the Oppressed Free

Text: Luke 4:16-19
Memory Verse: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18).

In His mission statement, Jesus declared, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to set the oppressed free…” (Luke 4:18). The oppressed refers to those physically or spiritually bound, trapped in a state of captivity and denied their God-given freedom. Satan, the author of oppression, initiated this when he deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, leading humanity into sin and demonic bondage.

God’s love for humanity, however, resulted in the manifestation of Jesus Christ, who came to remove sin and destroy the works of the devil by His death and resurrection (1 John 3:5-8). Jesus was sent into the world so that those who believe in Him would be delivered from sin’s grip and oppression, and become children of God (John 3:15, 1:12).

During His earthly ministry, Jesus empowered His disciples to continue this work of setting the captives free, giving them authority through the Great Commission. That same authority is available to you today, and God calls you to be involved in freeing the oppressed, as emphasised in Isaiah 58:6.

To break free from oppression, people must come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ by confessing their sins and accepting Him as Lord and Saviour. This act of faith releases the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing deliverance from demonic oppression and restoring the divine freedom intended by God. Encourage others to embrace Jesus today, and walk in the liberty He offers!

Prayer Points:
1. Lord, help me to live in the liberty that You have procured for me through Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross.
2. Lord, help me to be an example of the believer living a life of victory over sin.
