Text:
Leviticus 26:3&4; Ezekiel 34:22, 25-27
Memory Verse:
I will make them and the places all around My hill a blessing; and I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing (Ezekiel 34:26).
Why do most people desire showers instead of drops of rainwater? It is because drops of water could hardly assuage a dry and thirsty ground or support meaningful farming efforts. When rain
showers come, they not only wet the ground for farmers, but also provide water for drinking and other uses. When blessings come in trickles, they may not really have the desired impact, unlike when they come like floods. The hymn writers, Wayne Johnson and James Mcgranahan, in the song ‘There shall be showers of blessings’ requested for showers, instead of drops. Leviticus 26:3&4 give a big clue as to how you can get the showers rather than the drops, “If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments, and perform them, then I will give you rain in its season, the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. The effect of walking in
obedience to God’s statutes and commandments is enormous. It was in response to His people’s obedience in Ezekiel 34 that God declared, “there shall be showers of blessing.
In Deuteronomy 28:1-8, God told Israel the nature of blessings that would follow and even overtake them, if they were obedient and avoided rebellion against Him. In the same breath, He told them the punishments that awaited them if they disobeyed. Going through the history of Israel, one sees the fulfilment of both; blessings whenever they obeyed and punishment whenever they disobeyed.
Do you desire showers of blessing? The key is obedience to God’s words.
