Text:
Romans 7:7-18
Memory Verse:
“For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me and by it killed me” (Romans 7:11).
Sin is referred to as the transgression of the law. It is an act of disobedience to the laws or commandments of God. All were born with the nature of sin and until conversion takes place in a life, they continue to live a rebellious life directed by their master the devil and are totally at variance with the will of God. A child of God is expected to live a life of holiness free from the power of sin. A believer, who continues to indulge in sin, faces the same consequences as the unbeliever who has no knowledge of Christ. Can we continue in sin that grace may abound (Romans 6:1)? Sin has a consequence which is death, both physical and spiritual death (Ezekiel 18:4; Romans 6:23). Thus, sin is poison because it can actually destroy the body as well as the soul in hell fire. Poison can be harmful to the physical body or the soul. God’s hatred for sin was practically demonstrated in the following lives and situations:
1. Adam and Eve sinned and lost claim to the Garden of Eden.
2. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed as a result of their sinful lifestyle.
3. Drunkenness, illicit sex etc. all have negative and harmful consequences.
Lying, hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness, etc. all have destructive effects on both our physical health and spiritual life; for instance hatred led to the actual murder of Abel by his brother, Cain.
Turn away from sin today that you may enjoy a time of fellowship with God. Sin is poison. Be free from its destructive power.
Prayer Points:
1. I receive power to be free from sin and its destructive power.
2. Lord, destroy every root of sin in my life.
