The Blessings of Reuben

Text: Deuteronomy 33:1-6
Memory Verse: “Let Reuben live, and not die, Nor let his men be few” (Deuteronomy 33:6).
Reuben, the first child of Jacob and Leah, holds a significant place in biblical history as the progenitor of the tribe of Reuben. The meaning of his name, “behold or see a son,” highlights the importance of his birth. As the firstborn son, Reuben’s name is listed first among Jacob’s 12 sons.

However, his affair with Bilhah, his father’s concubine (Genesis 35:22) led to his losing the privileges traditionally bestowed upon firstborn sons and resulted in him forfeiting his birthright. Despite this, Reuben demonstrated some admirable qualities. He intervened on behalf of his brother Joseph, persuading his brothers to spare Joseph’s life in Genesis 37:21-30. Additionally, Reuben offered his own sons as surety for
Benjamin’s safety, showcasing his willingness to take responsibility (Genesis 42:37). Years later, Moses blessed the tribe of Reuben, praying for their prosperity and growth. Moses’ blessing, “Let Reuben live,” and his prayer, “Nor let his men be few,” underscore God’s desire to bless and multiply the tribe.

Reuben’s story serves as a powerful reminder that your past mistakes do not define your future. When you come to Christ, you become a partaker of God’s blessings, regardless of your past actions. Furthermore, if you confess your sins and return to the Lord, He is faithful and just to forgive you and cancel any curses that may have been placed upon you (1 John 1:9).

This good news offers you hope and a second chance to experience God’s mercy and blessing.

Prayer Points:
1. Father, forgive all my past and present sins; wash me with Your blood.
2. I cancel every curse placed upon me through and by anyone.
