Text: John 14:15-25
Memory Verse: “If you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
Obedience is saying yes, from the heart, to the love of God. Obedience is not outward conformity; It is not technical compliance. The love for Jesus is demonstrated through obedience to His teachings. Obedience is a result of a heart that is set on God’s will, a willingness to follow His guidance, and recognition that His commandments are not burdensome. The spirit of obedience is a willingness to submit to the Holy Spirit and no longer allow oneself to be imprisoned by the false realities of worldly freedom. The spirit of obedience says, “I will obey God because of my love for Him.” Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”
Why do we need the spirit of obedience?
1. Some circumstances are beyond our natural capability to bear, while some are too costly to carry out. This is apparent in the life of Abraham (Genesis 12-17). It takes the promptness of obedience to make the head way.
2. For unreserved obedience (Genesis 22:1-18). Even Jesus needed the spirit of obedience to make it to the end. Remove the Grace of God from your life, and nothing remains.
3. God will always manifest Himself to the obedient. Obedience may be costly, but the end result is precious.
4. Obedience secures divine presence (Exodus 14:15, Psalm 114). Obedience is an act of surrender. It is when we, as Christians, say, “not my will Lord but Your will”, and align our actions with the will of God.
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, I desire a fresh endowment of the spirit of obedience in my walk with You.
2. Father, help me to enjoy the benefits of obedience.
