Text:
Philippians 3: 17-21
Memory Verse:
“Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern”(Philippians 3:17).
After being unsuccessful in an election into an office in church, a contestant accosted his friend angrily. “You are unpatriotic for not supporting me in my bid, though we come from the same State!”, he accused. “I could not vote for someone I cannot follow, seeing you are in the
occult, though a church member” his friend retorted. A pattern is a plan, model or diagram to be followed in making things. Imitating this original ensures a consistent, characteristic form or style.
Dressmakers, Architects and Builders understand the importance of following the right pattern. Only the right pattern will get you a desired result. Paul, while encouraging the Philippians, advised that they follow the right pattern that he had laid if their goal was heaven. A good follower always
follows the examples of his master. Paul was following Christ’s example. He shunned confidence in his achievements, relied on the righteousness by faith in Christ and pressed on towards perfection. Jesus gave us many examples to follow. He depended wholly on God the Father and taught humility by washing His disciples feet (John 13:14-16).
Your goal is very important and will determine which pattern you will follow. Caleb believed the word of God that Israel would conquer the land of Canaan and so followed God’s word fully (Numbers 14:24). Is a Christ-like life and eternity in heaven your goal? You must follow the right pattern required to achieve your goal. Whose example are you following? Jesus is your greatest
example. Only the right pattern will help you reach your goal.
Prayer Points:
1. May I understand and follow the pattern You have laid down in Your word.
2. May I not be derailed from following Your pattern so I can reach my goal.
