Text: Genesis 36:6-8
Memory Verse: “Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob” (Genesis 36:6).
Jacob had recently returned from 20 years sojourn in Padan Aram, instigated by the need for safety from his brother, Esau, who had intended to kill him after Isaac, their father’s demise (Genesis 27:41). Jacob’s return was predicated on God’s instruction and promise to him; “Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you” (Genesis 31:3).
Before Jacob’s arrival at Mamre, he had, at God’s command, returned to Bethel to reconsecrate himself and his household to God, building an altar for Him there. Little wonder we see the subsequent turn of events: Esau, who had dwelt in Canaan all his life, and during Jacob’s 20 years absence, voluntarily and without a fight, relocated his household and possessions to another land. This happened, though he had been fully established in Canaan with his family, and could only have been God’s doing.
Surely, God was with Jacob. He deflated Esau’s anger and resentment towards him, granted him favour and made room for him to easily possess the Promised Land. Truly, “When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him” (Proverbs 16:7). Without any doubt, Jacob’s re commitment to God and obedience to His instructions were key to the
fulfilment of this promise. Rest assured that God is faithful to His promise and can be trusted to make room for His own, even in adverse circumstances. Just obey His instructions.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, thank You for being faithful to Your promises and the assurance that You are always with me and will make room for me.
2. Lord, please help me to fully consecrate myself to You and live for and serve You in total obedience.
