God, Our Refuge And Strength

Text: Psalm 46:1-11

Memory Verse: “God is our Refuge and Strength, a very present Help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1).

Psalm 46 is assumed to have been written by king Hezekiah during the Assyrian invasion of Jerusalem. The Psalm which is about confidence in God, encourages us to hope and trust in God and His power as well as His gracious presence with people even in the worst of times. The Psalm
encourages victory over our enemies through Christ.

A refuge is a safe place where one can turn to for help or security. It can be a shelter from danger or hardship. During the Israelites journey to the Promised land, the Lord God instructed them to set apart six cities to act as cities of refuge, to act as asylum for persons who accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35:15). The man-slayer was to run to one of the cities to escape revenge from relatives or friends of a victim of manslaughter. As long as the man-slayer was within the confines of the city of refuge, they were protected against harm by the law.

Our God is all-powerful and unlimited. Though circumstances surrounding us can instil fear into us, we are safe under God’s watch when we make Him our refuge. The same Lord who stilled the storm on the Galilean Sea (Mark 4:35-41) is ever present both in stormy and calm times.
Intimate relationship with the Lord is a safe refuge from Satan’s power and all the dangers. Instead of struggling, be still and listen to God. Trust Him wholeheartedly, for He is a sure refuge and strength in time of trouble.

Prayer Points:
1. Almighty God, whose power and love are infinite, be my sure refuge.
2. Help me, Lord, to develop an intimate relationship with You.
