Text: Genesis 26:1-5; 12-14
Memory Verse: “Then the LORD appeared to him and said; ‘Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you’” (Genesis 26: 2).
In Ruth 1 we read what befell Elimelech and his household as a result of migrating to another country to seek refuge. What does God expect of His children and what do you stand to gain by being obedient to His instructions?
There were different times when famine occurred in scripture, but the outcome was dependent upon the action taken by the parties involved. Isaac experienced famine in his days. He decided to go to Gérar; perhaps he had
intended to end up in Egypt, but God disrupted his plan for his good (Genesis 26:2-5).
From Isaac’s story, we learn:
1. Seek to know God’s plan for you.
2. Be attentive to His instructions (Psalm 32:8).
3. Ensure you obey Him in totality.
God is aware of all that is happening in and around you. He knows it before it manifests. Isaac obeyed God and was blessed. In Genesis26:12-14, he experienced unprecedented prosperity to the extent that he was the envy of
neighbours. Sometimes, some bad experiences of sojourning during famine could lead to unplanned breakthroughs as in the case of Joseph (Genesis 37 & 41).
God’s provision to navigate the period of famine successfully for you could be in your country or elsewhere. The most important thing is to know God’s plan for you and not follow others blindly. Is God asking you to migrate? Remember, it is only in God that you can find true refuge.
Prayer Point:
1. God in all ways I have gone wrong, please have mercy.
2. At a time like this, please, Lord, direct me.
