Text: Jeremiah 35:1-10
Memory Verse: “But they said, ‘We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, “You shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever’” (Jeremiah 35:6).
It was time to serve lunch in school. We the teachers already knew what each child could not eat due to allergies, religious restrictions or parental preferences. As I went around ensuring the children were served, one of them seeing the other plates going around shouted, “No meat, please!” He was one of the children who was not allowed to eat meat. I was not going to serve him meat because I knew he was a vegetarian, but he wanted to be sure that I knew that he was not permitted to eat meat. I spoke with him reassuring him that he had a special meal not including meat reserved for him. This incident reminded me of the Rechabites. This young boy knew that his parents had told him never to eat meat, and he was vocal about not disobeying them.
The Rechabites knew what they had learnt from their fathers, and the foundations laid and stuck with it (Jeremiah 35:5-10). As children of God, we have been given instructions, commandments and guidelines to live by. Things
that challenge us to disobey these instructions and commandments come to us, but how steadfast are we in sticking with what God has told us to do? Like that child who was vocal about the dietary restrictions he had been taught
at home, are we vocal about the reasons for our Christian lifestyle choices (Philippians 4:5)? Are you quick to tell people, “Jesus told me not to do this?”
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, help me obey Your instructions all the time.
2. Lord, help me to be courageous in sticking to godly values.
