Pass On The Touch Through Discipleship

Text: 2 Timothy 2:1&2

Memory Verse: And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).

Paul exhorts Timothy to be strong in the grace that Christ gives. This exhortation is much needed, especially in these present times. He then outlines a pattern of discipleship that spans four generations of believers: from himself, Paul, to Timothy and faithful men who will be able to teach others.

One recalls how, when we were young, our parents and older ones, through folklore, discipled and connected us to the lives of our forebears. Through such stories, we could relate with their successes, exploits, and aspirations, such
that, though we never met them personally, we felt like we knew them. Consequently, family virtues, reputation, expectations etc. were appreciated and maintained by succeeding generations. Today, such folklore is literally dead and the younger generations, beyond their immediate families, have no connection with the dreams and aspirations of their forebears.
Sadly, the same way the strength of folklore has faded, so has true discipleship. Parents and leaders in the body of Christ have, somehow, failed to commit the sound gospel they received from those before them “to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
For the Gospel of Christ to grow and endure, Paul’s faultless pattern of discipleship must be maintained. One generation must painstakingly pass it on to the next in words and deeds. As a parent, leader, minister or, even a
“titleless” committed believer, you must intentionally commit to teaching your children, wards, young believers around you to ensure that they become established in the faith (2 Timothy 1:5)

Prayer Points:
1. Lord restore/ignite the fire of and commitment to effective discipleship in my heart.
2. I receive grace to effectively disciple other young believers in my sphere of influence.
