Text: Genesis 19:23-26
Memory Verse: “But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26).
Gravity is the invisible force that causes objects to fall to the ground or be attracted to one another. Gravitation, more specifically, is the force pulling two objects toward each other. In the spiritual realm, there are also gravitational forces; forces from the past that attempt to pull you back
into old habits, pain, or bondage. These forces resist your forward movement and spiritual progress.
What is the thing in your past that is pulling you back? Is it failure, guilt, shame, fear, betrayal, abuse, rejection, resentment, or unforgiveness? Perhaps it is worldliness or carnal desires, like those seen in Lot’s wife who looked back and turned into a pillar of salt. Or the Israelites who, though freed from slavery, kept longing for Egypt, murmuring and complaining against God (Numbers 11:4–6, 18). They remembered their past with longing rather than moving forward with gratitude.
The gravitational pull of the past always results in ruin. It destroyed Lot’s wife. It kept an entire generation of Israelites from entering the Promised Land. The same danger exists for you if you dwell on the past. Ecclesiastes 7:10 warns, “Do not say, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’ For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.”
Let go of the past; its pain, pleasures, or nostalgia. Cling to the promises of God and press forward. Do not let the gravitational pull of your past ruin your future. Break free and rise into the destiny God has prepared for you.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, deliver me from the grip of my past.
2. Lord, reverse the ruins of the gravitational pull of the past in my life.
