Text:
Deuteronomy 4:1-10
Memory Verse:
“Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren” (Deuteronomy 4:9).
Remembrance is the recollection of a previous event, person or thing. The role of remembrance is key in God’s scheme of things for man. Thus, He enjoins us to remember and not forget the things we have heard and seen. Remembrance of God’s words and His past doings in our lives or those of others helps to reinforce His faithfulness and strengthen our faith, such that we are able to trust and depend on Him in our present challenges. David remembered God’s help in his previous encounters with the lion and the bear and was able to leverage on this for his victory over Goliath (1 Samuel 17:33-37,45-51). In Genesis 35:1-4, it was easy for Jacob to heed God’s command to go and dwell in Bethel and make an altar to Him there because he remembered his previous encounter there with God, the promise of His presence with him and his own vow to God if He brought him back from his journey to his father’s house in peace.
There were several remembrances by the disciples of the things they heard and saw while Jesus was with them that helped to strengthen their belief and made them more dogged in their faith throughout their challenges after His resurrection and ascension into Heaven. For instance, Peter testified that it was the remembrance of God’s word that assisted him to accept the Holy Spirit’s
baptism on the Gentiles and, thus, become a more willing minister to them (Acts 11:16, Acts 1:5).
There is power in remembrance. So, always remember God’s words and previous doings in your life.
Prayer Points:
1. Father, thank You for the ability to remember the things I have heard and seen.
2. Lord, please help me to maximise the power of remembrance in my relationship with You and others so that my faith can be strengthened.
