Text: Ecclesiastes 7:1-4
Memory Verse: “The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth” (Ecclesiastes 7:4).
Life is not a bed of roses and, even if it was, it would still have thorns like rose bushes. During difficult times, which come in different forms and shapes, you must not ask God “why?” Job says it is foolish to accept good
from God, and not accept ad versity (Job 2:10b). Life’s difficulties teach valuable lessons that cannot be learned, understood or appreciated otherwise. Godly wisdom through difficulties teaches you the value of a good name – a lasting legacy; something to be remembered for, and good reputation. Money lost can be recovered, but a tarnished reputation cannot be regained (Proverbs 22:1). It helps you look at life through the eyes of eternity. While partying, people hardly think about serious things like they do while at funerals. Only fools live for today, forgetting that there is tomorrow and eternity (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Difficulties teach you to be careful about who you take advice from – peer pressure is sometimes ‘advice’ from fools. Do not allow fools’ laughter to pressure you into doing things. Do not be hasty in taking decisions or judge issues, especially without knowing the entire story. Trust God’s sovereignty, knowing that yesterday is gone and should be left behind. Understand that there are things you cannot control or change (Matthew 6:27).
Difficulties teach you to live with grace and humility and make room for others; and to surround yourself with righteous people, so you will not be drawn into a sinful life like Solomon. You can learn from difficulties.
