Esther 1:3-8

Memory Verse:
“when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendour of his excellent majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days in all” (Esther1:4).

A Fair is a show where farmers, traders and producers display their products; it could also be described as an exhibition or advertising of goods. However, this king’s fair lasted for a much longer time – 187 days! The venue was Susa, the winter capital of the ancient Persian Empire, where a Vanity Show was organised by king Ahasuerus for more than half a year. Vanity is excessive pride in one’s appearance or accomplishments; conceit. The exhibition included fabrics, decorations, splash of golden chairs, architectural designs and furnishings. The final seven days were set aside for everybody to feast. Drinking was unrestricted and wine was served in vessels of
gold, some of which his grandfather must have taken from the temple in Jerusalem. It was a show of pride. Perhaps Ahasuerus had not read from the chronicles of history how Nebuchadnezzar was deposed for seven years because of pride (Daniel 4:28-33).
In Daniel 5:2-5, king Belshazzar organised such a feast of drinks with grave consequences. Wine is a mocker and king Solomon who ruled 500 years ahead of Ahasuerus said that alcohol bites like a viper at last, though the drink looks attractive in the cup (Proverbs 23:31-33). Remember Nabal? He got drunk and cursed David instead of appreciating his help.
The show of pride of the king was a vanity fair and totally uncalled for. You must remain humble and avoid being lured into the unnecessary display of your wealth or talents. God detests pride and hates the proud.

Prayer Points:
1. May I always remember that there is nothing I possess which I did not receive.
2. May my heart not be lifted up by pride.
