Isaiah 66:1&2
Memory Verse:
“But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word” (Isaiah 66:2b).
The psalmist prayed in Psalm 119:132 “Look upon me Lord and be merciful unto me, As your custom is toward those who love Your name.” This aligns with God’s declaration in Isaiah 66:2b that He will look on the person who is poor and of a contrite spirit and trembles at His word.
David could make this plea because he knew he had these qualities. Clearly then, those who qualify for God’s mercy must:
1. Be poor and of a contrite spirit. They are those who are penitent, humble, helpless and in need of God’s help. The Kingdom of heaven belongs to such people (Matthew 5:3).
2. Tremble at the word of God. They study and obey the word of God to the letter? God expects us to read, understand and obey His word at all times.
3. Love, cherish, and adore His name, and not use His name in vain. “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7).
To these, God will be merciful. So, examine yourself. Do you love, cherish and adore His name? Do you have a contrite spirit and tremble at God’s word? That’s the only way you can qualify for God to look on you favourably. It will be disastrous if God takes His eyes off you. Therefore, be steadfast and focused in obeying the word of God because that is the only proof that you are His disciple.
Prayer Points:
1. Look upon me, Lord, and be merciful unto me.
2. Holy Spirit, please help me to always tremble at the word of God.
