Text: Matthew 14:22-31
Memory Verse: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
Jesus’ disciples going ahead of Him as instructed, saw something they had never seen before and did not expect. They were therefore afraid until He spoke.
Fear, a spirit-driven emotion, is a destructive force and a potent ally of Satan. Whether manifesting as anxiety, worry, panic, nervousness, dread, insecurity, apprehension, or horror, believers must rise above it daily. In Numbers 13 & 14, ten of the twelve spies returned with fearful reports, claiming it was impossible to take the land, implying that God was limited in power and deceptive. Entertaining fear sends this same message.
Overcoming fear hinges on three components of faith:
1. Power: Proclaiming Jesus daily unleashes divine power, strengthening believers to confront fear boldly (Romans 1:16).
2. Love: Positioned as the cornerstone, love perfects faith. Toward God, it means obeying Jesus’ instructions (2 John 1:6, 9). Love toward others, encourages patience, enduring hardships without retaliation, being slow to anger, gentle, caring, and compassionate, even when challenging, and helping without expecting a reward.
3. Sound Mind: This is gained through consistent Bible study, that equips believers with understanding to discern the truth and reject fear’s lies (Psalm 119:130).
These three elements, power, love, and sound mind, form the faith that overcomes fear. Contrary to popular belief, faith is not merely confidence that prayers will be answered. True faith is absolute reverence for God, reflected in thoughts, words, and deeds, trusting Him to fulfil His promises. By embracing these principles, believers can reject fear and stand firm in faith’s victory.
Prayer Points:
1. Dear Father, please direct me towards the passion for evangelism, Bible study and love in Christ to conquer fear everyday.
2. Loving Father, may my life express to all creation the unlimited power You alone wield.
