Text: Matthew 15:21-28
Memory Verse: “Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘Lord, help me!’” (Matthew 15:25).
The attitude many Christians display in prayer and in their demonstration of faith is a matter of concern. Some approach God with a commanding tone, as if speaking to an errand boy or someone indebted to them, all in the name of faith. It is important to remember that
God is not indebted to anyone.
Consider the example of the Gentile woman in Matthew 15:22-27. She approached Jesus with humility and genuine faith, seeking healing for her demon-possessed daughter. She didn’t demand anything, but cried out, “…Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David…” (Matthew 15:22). Even when Jesus told her that He was not sent to people like her, she continued to worship Him, pleading for help.
When Jesus challenged her that it was not right to take the food that belonged to the children and throw it to dogs, her humility remained steadfast. She acknowledged that what Jesus said is true but, notwithstanding, dogs were allowed to eat the scraps that fall under their master’s table. Her perseverance, faith, humility, and dependence on God resulted in a miracle, as she received more than she expected. Such too was the attitude of the blind man in Luke 18:38, who in humility and faith, cried out “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus restored his sight.
These stories teach the importance of the right attitude in faith and prayer. You must adopt a humble, respectful approach when seeking God’s blessings, so that you too can experience His miracles.
Prayer Points:
1. Lord, I am sorry for every wrong attitude I have exhibited in the place of prayer and exercise of faith. Please forgive me.
2. Holy Spirit, please help me to always approach God’s presence with appropriate reverence.
